Garlic Infused Olive Oil—More Flavor, Less Bloat

It's true, garlic is part of the problem...

Everyone knows that garlic is the flavor king of every savory meal, but if you're a bloat-bellied, IBS, or SIBO warrior, you know that it can cause a whole slew of problems when consumed.

Garlic, whether cooked, raw, or powdered, is one of the top high FODMAP foods that contribute to bloating and digestive discomfort. Yet the idea of giving up garlic in the name of a bloat-free lifestyle can be distressing to my foodies out there, and understandably so!

I'm here to show you the best IBS, SIBO, bloat-bellied hack for maintaining that delicious, savory flavor in every meal without increasing your digestive issues along the way...

The secret? Garlic-infused olive oil! So, why is this the ultimate hack, and how can we prepare it at home in three easy steps?

...Read on to find out...

The power of olive oil...

First of all, let's take a moment to give credit where credit is due—raw olive oil is a saint.

You heard it here first! Drizzling raw, organic, extra-virgin olive oil on every meal is a fantastic way to get healthy omega-3 fatty acids that will decrease inflammation in the gut and keep your bowel movements regular (a slow-moving gut is one of the main causes of chronic bloating).

Olive oil serves as the perfect carrier oil for our delicious flavor king—the garlic bulb. It captures all the savory notes, without the fermentable fibers that lead to digestive discomfort in those with IBS, SIBO, and other gut imbalances.

Let's talk about how this yummy household staple is made in three fast-and-easy steps...

How to make your garlic-infused oil...

Step One: Peel and slice 8 garlic cloves.

Step Two: Add 1 cup of olive oil with your garlic to a saucepan over very low heat, and simmer for 5 minutes with a lid on.

Step Three: Remove from heat and allow your oil to cool until reaching room temperature, before straining it and adding it to a jar or bottle to be refrigerated.

This infused olive oil will last up to one month in your fridge!

A note for long-term gut-healing...

While avoiding trigger foods can be a good short-term strategy, it's important to understand that, even when it comes to garlic—it's not the garlic's fault.

It can be all too easy to fall into the trap of avoiding a long list of trigger foods, with the goal of "getting your symptoms under control." Yes, we need to get this under control so you can eat in peace. However, long-term food restriction can lead to malnutrition, contributing to other health issues down the line, and even making gut-healing all the more difficult.

So, what do we do instead?

1. Use restrictive diets to get things under control and pave the way for healing. Low FODMAP, Paleo, and carb-restricting diets are amazing tools to reign in your bloating symptoms. Use them strategically to reduce your symptoms while you rebalance and heal your gut...

2. Test your gut to get clear answers and repair the gut from within. GI Map and other functional stool testing are used to pinpoint your unique microbial imbalances so you can heal long-term and reintroduce foods, pain-free.

At Holistic Healing Diagnostics, we do just that! Root cause gut testing + personalized healing plans + practitioner support to get your bloated belly under control, and get you back to the life you had before digestive symptoms got in the way of enjoying work, family, and free time.
